Lesson 1 - Keeping yourself safe around your horse
You’ve had your horse all it’s life why would you need to know this? Well you are about to go prodding and poking your horse in places that may be sore from a saddle that doesn’t fit (which is why you’ve probably enrolled in this course in the first place) so a few tips on safety are important to be highlighted here.
Lesson 2 - Identify and markup the saddlefit area
So what is a saddlefit area? It sounds so simple in that it is the area on the horse’s back that the saddle is placed. How do you know where this is when horses have different shapes and saddles vary in style especially between English and Western treed saddles. The only way to clearly identify this area is to mark out the area of your horse’s back based on their individual conformation and anatomy and then place the saddle on that area.
Lesson 3 - Analysis and measurement of the saddlefit area
In this lesson we will examine and measure the area that you have identified and analyse it to determine your horses saddlefit characteristics. This will assist you in talking to saddlers, saddle suppliers and fitters about what saddle you will be looking for.
Lesson 4 - Does that saddle suit my horse’s saddlefit characteristics?
Now that you have your horses area marked out, measured and recorded you can go ahead and place different saddles on and see how it compares to the area you have marked out.
Lesson 5 - Optional Assessment
Once you’ve identified and marked your horse’s saddle fit area, you can submit the details of your study and practical work in the Course Assessment to earn a Certificate of Completion. All course participants are welcome to join our Saddlefitting community, but only those who have submitted an Assessment meeting the Pass Standard can request a Virtual Saddle Fit with Gill Shepherd.
